NEW Junior Domestic Competition

Junior Domestic Winter Competition 2025
Team Registration is HERE!
FAQ

1. What has changed in the MRBA team registration process?

Previously, individual players registered, and they were allocated into teams by MRBA. MRBA has introduced team entry alongside individual registration. Teams can now register as a whole, with a Team Manager and Coach arranged by the team.

Please note - Under 10 boys will remain as individual registration to ensure equity.

2. Why is MRBA changing to a team registration process?

MRBA is introducing team-based registration to support the rapid population growth in the Macedon Ranges and the increasing number of players in our competition. This change fosters stronger community connections by allowing friends to register together and aligning team names with major towns to build local pride and support for basketball.

As part of our 40th Anniversary celebrations, this marks the beginning of program improvements aimed at increasing participation for all abilities. Higher player numbers open doors for more funding, sponsorships, enhanced player pathways, and expanded all-abilities programs. It also enables greater investment in officials, coaches, and volunteers while strengthening MRBA’s influence with sporting bodies, local councils, and government agencies.

We remain committed to fairness, inclusivity, and community spirit, ensuring players of all skill levels have the opportunity to participate in a fun, supportive, and competitive environment. More initiatives will be introduced throughout the year to further grow and enhance basketball in the Macedon Ranges.

3. How do we register a team?

The Team Delegate (usually the Team Manager or Coach) must register the team.

The Team Delegate registers the team for the season, selecting the preferred town-based team name.

MRBA discourages the formation of "super-teams", our aim is for an inclusive, supportive and fun space where everyone can enjoy the benefits of basketball.

4. Can my child still register as an individual if they don’t have a team?

Yes. While we would encourage the formation and registration of teams as the first choice, we understand that some players, due to various circumstances, may not be part of a team.

There will still be an option for individual players to register, and MRBA will allocate them into a team.

Additionally, all boys in the Under 10 and below category must register individually to allow for fair and balanced team formation.

5. What if we don’t have a Team Manager or Coach?

Each team is responsible for organising a TM and Coach before registering. Being a Team Manager or Coach is a great way to support your child - they love having you involved.

Consider asking relatives, family friends, or community members. The only requirements are:

  • Must be over 18 years old

  • Must have a current Working with Children Check (WWCC)

  • The TM and Coach must not be from the same family

6. How do team names work?

MRBA has introduced town-based team names to strengthen community identity. Team Delegates must select their preferred major town name during registration (e.g. Gisborne, New Gisborne, Woodend, Kyneton).

If multiple teams are registered under the same town name, MRBA will differentiate them by adding the Coach’s initials (e.g., “New Gisborne AT,” “New Gisborne BV”).

This means there will be multiple teams across the age groups, divisions, and genders with the same name. We believe this will encourage collaboration, a sense of community, and entertainment and excitement as you support similar teams.

7. What if my child plays for a club in another association?

We welcome teams from other clubs and associations to join the MRBA competition. However, if your team wishes to wear their club uniform while playing in MRBA, you must seek permission from that club first.

8. What age groups are available?

We are catering to the following age groups:

  • Junior Girls - 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014

  • Intermediate Girls - 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010

  • Boys U10 - 2017, 2016 (individual registration only)

  • Boys U12 - 2015, 2014

  • Boys U14 - 2013, 2012

  • Boys U16 - 2011, 2010

9. How many players are required to form a team?

For this initial season, MRBA recommends teams starting with 5-6 players. This will enable the placement of individual players who register without a team.

MRBA will assist in placing individual players into teams with lower numbers, with the aim of having enough players to allow for substitutions and ensure fair play throughout the season.

10. What if my child’s friends can’t form a full team?

MRBA welcomes partial team registrations. If your child has some teammates but not enough for a full team, see Point 9 above.

11. How do I know if my child has been placed into a team if they register individually?

Once individual registrations close, MRBA will allocate players into teams and notify parents via email.

12. Is there still a grading period?

To support the correct placement into appropriate teams a skills grading session for individual players will occur as follows:

  • Monday 28th April: Junior Girls and Intermediate Girls

  • Tuesday 29th April: U12, 14 and 16 boys

  • Wednesday 30th April: U10 boys

Teams will be graded in the first 3 rounds to ensure that they are aligned to the appropriate division as applicable.

13. How much does registration cost?

Early Bird Registration fees is $150. This will revert to standard fee of $210 (after April 6 2025) for individuals and teams.

Team Managers and Coaches of individual teams, will need to ensure all players have registered before the competition begins.

14. Will training be provided for teams?

We encourage teams to have training sessions. MRBA has venues around Macedon Ranges available for teams to book. Teams will be responsible for the court hire fees.

MRBA runs skill sessions Saturday mornings for younger/junior players. These sessions are independent of team training. More details on times and locations for the MRBA skills sessions are found HERE

15. Will MRBA still provide jerseys/singlets?
Yes, we will continue to utilise existing jerseys, ensuring no additional cost for players to purchase uniforms.

See point 7 if you are wanting to wear club/association jerseys outside MRBA.

16. Can my child play in an older age group to be with their friends?

Yes, players can request to play in an older age group. However, this will be subject to approval by MRBA to ensure it is appropriate for the player's skill level and safety. If a player wishes to play up an age group, please indicate this during registration.

17. I'm worried about these changes?

We understand that this is a significant change to how teams are formed and registered, and we may not get it correct straight away. MRBA will be closely monitoring the process and gathering feedback throughout the season. If adjustments are needed to improve the experience for players, teams, and families, we will make changes as required. Our goal is to create a fair and enjoyable competition for all participants.
